As featured in the Village Voice. (Sorry, we won’t be serving vodka….)
Tonight’s the night for Tarot-A-Palooza, our big Halloween tarot marathon at the gallery! It starts at 6 pm and runs until 11 pm. I’m pleased to report that we got a nice write up in the Village Voice, New York City’s most important weekly paper:

FEELING LUCKY?
Give me a quarter . . . I’ll tell you your fortune
BY ARACELI CRUZ
There’s a quaint studio/gallery residing among the Victorian homes near Brooklyn College that has become a sanctuary of sorts. On a typical day, this is where author and illustrator Kris Waldherr displays her work, conducts workshops, and sells books. However, once a month, visitors flock here to get psychic readings—and tonight, on the eve of Halloween, Waldherr is staying open later than usual for Tarot-a-Palooza. Having transformed her gallery into a mystical haven, she has invited tarot card readers for a night of fortune-telling fun. Food and refreshments will be served, and, as Waldherr tells us, she might have to open a bottle or two of vodka to really make a night of it.”
I’m a bit puzzled by the vodka reference. But we will have wine and cheese and fruit. And besides getting your cards read, you can also view our new fairy tale exhibition.
The readers for tonight’s tarot marathon will be me, urban shaman Mama Donna Henes, Diane Saarinen, and Rene Collins. We’’ll be offering readings at a variety of prices on any of your questions. Free admission and refreshments. Costumes optional. Spooky decor and door prizes.
This event takes place at:
Kris Waldherr Art and Words
1501 Newkirk Avenue (entrance on Marlborough, across from Rite Aid)
Brooklyn, 11226

And happy Halloween!

On a related note as to events and such, I’ll be having an open studio here on November 7 and 8th, from 11 am to 4 pm. It’s all part of my neighborhood’s annual Flatbush Artists Studio Tour, which features the work of twenty-two talented artists:
Set in Victorian Flatbush, a center for Brooklyn’s most stunning houses and gardens, you’re invited:
- To walk our leafy streets
- To tour artists’ studios
- To discover their artwork: painting, sculpture, mixed media, and much more.
Admission is free. Preview the other participating artists’ work here. Can’t make it? Join us at the opening reception on November 5, 7-10 PM at the Newkirk Medical Center, located at 1414 Newkirk Avenue (around the corner from the gallery).
New October (and yes, Halloween) events at the gallery
Lately I’ve been feeling like a multi-tasking Elastigirl*, with everything going on in my life. Between the Love Tarot app launch, Thea starting school, finishing up two Doomed Queens-themed decks, working on the New Book, and more — well, I’m plumbed stretched out. I’ve attempted to limit the things that I take on; for example, I’m not playing cello in the upcoming BSO concert. Regardless, life is still a plethora of overactivity. Frankly, I think September and October are just incredibly busy times for a lot of people. So why should I be any different?
Anyway, on that note of “yes, we’ve overextended, but we’re doing it all, dammit!”, here are our upcoming events at the gallery for October. I hope to see some of you there. (Related note: New workshops for kids and adults over here.)

Closing Reception for
BROOKLYN: THROUGH A CHILD’S EYES
art and drawings by children ages 4 – 7

Join us in celebrating the close of this very special exhibition! We’ll be having a kid’s dance party. Free admission and refreshments.
More about this exhibit: For a period of seven hours on June 14, 2009, the gallery was taken over by twenty-one children, ages three to nine, who created over seventy pieces of art. The subjects children decided to illustrate range from the abstract — color field paintings and repeat patterns — to readily recognizable Brooklyn scenes, such as the Cyclone at Coney Island and Greenwood Cemetery. These paintings and drawings became the basis for this art exhibit, which was curated by the children themselves. A catalog of this exhibit is available for purchase. E-mail us to purchase one.

FAIRY TALES: FROM THE DARK WOOD TO HAPPILY EVERY AFTER

featuring the art of
Kristina Carroll, Leela Corman, Mary Louise Geering, Lisa Hunt, Aram Kim, Amy Saidens, Carisa Swenson, Kris Waldherr, and Karen Zuegner
Fairy tales have a special place in our childhood memories. But did you know that these beloved stories were originally written for an adult audience? Fairy Tales: From The Dark Wood to Happily Ever After explores this surprising duality. It presents a wide variety of visual responses to fairy tales — from children’s book illustration to fine art; from fantasy to graphic novels. *If you haven’t seen the Pixar film The Incredibles, Elastigirl is the multi-tasking and impressively stretchable mom of the superhero family — a great metaphor for over-extended women everywhere imho. I heart Brad Bird.
Love Tarot app launch day! And a video!
Today’s the day my new app goes live on iTunes! The Love Tarot app features tarot readings and romantic love stories with my award-winning Lover’s Path Tarot.
In celebration of the launch, here is the YouTube promo video for it, which is considerably more romantic than the Goddess Tarot app video. This video was inspired by The Lover’s Path, the illustrated novel that accompanied The Lover’s Path Tarot. (Just in case the embedding doesn’t work, here’s the direct YouTube link.)
Learn more about the Love Tarot app at www.Loverspath.com. Or, if you want to cut to the chase, you can download it from iTunes as either a free Lite version or a paid Full version. (Heads up: The Paid version is on sale at $1.99 until 10/4/09—regular price $2.99.)

Next up for me: Preparing for the upcoming gallery show, which will be about fairy tales. I’ll also probably be returning to work on my New Book, which is just about ready for the next phase of development.
But for tonight, I think I’ll raise an Appletini toward Cupertino, California.

The lovely soundtrack for the video is by Ensemble Mirable, Conversations Galantes.
