New October (and yes, Halloween) events at the gallery

elastigirl © Pixar/DisneyLately I’ve been feeling like a multi-tasking Elastigirl*, with everything going on in my life. Between the Love Tarot app launch, Thea starting school, finishing up two Doomed Queens-themed decks, working on the New Book, and more — well, I’m plumbed stretched out. I’ve attempted to limit the things that I take on; for example, I’m not playing cello in the upcoming BSO concert. Regardless, life is still a plethora of overactivity. Frankly, I think September and October are just incredibly busy times for a lot of people. So why should I be any different?

Anyway, on that note of “yes, we’ve overextended, but we’re doing it all, dammit!”, here are our upcoming events at the gallery for October. I hope to see some of you there. (Related note: New workshops for kids and adults over here.)

Closing Reception for
BROOKLYN: THROUGH A CHILD’S EYES

art and drawings by children ages 4 – 7

Join us in celebrating the close of this very special exhibition! We’ll be having a kid’s dance party. Free admission and refreshments.

More about this exhibit: For a period of seven hours on June 14, 2009, the gallery was taken over by twenty-one children, ages three to nine, who created over seventy pieces of art. The subjects children decided to illustrate range from the abstract — color field paintings and repeat patterns — to readily recognizable Brooklyn scenes, such as the Cyclone at Coney Island and Greenwood Cemetery. These paintings and drawings became the basis for this art exhibit, which was curated by the children themselves. A catalog of this exhibit is available for purchase. E-mail us to purchase one.

FAIRY TALES: FROM THE DARK WOOD TO HAPPILY EVERY AFTER

fairytaleart
featuring the art of
Kristina Carroll, Leela Corman, Mary Louise Geering, Lisa Hunt, Aram Kim, Amy Saidens, Carisa Swenson, Kris Waldherr, and Karen Zuegner

Fairy tales have a special place in our childhood memories. But did you know that these beloved stories were originally written for an adult audience? Fairy Tales: From The Dark Wood to Happily Ever After explores this surprising duality. It presents a wide variety of visual responses to fairy tales — from children’s book illustration to fine art; from fantasy to graphic novels. The gallery’s most popular event! As featured in Time Out New York, http://CNN.com, Yelp’s “On the Radar”, Brooklyn Based’s “Tip Sheet”, and internationally in La Libération.

Get ready for a big Halloween tarot marathon! To celebrate the season, our monthly tarot salon will have extended hours. The readers at October’s Salon-Marathon will be Kris Waldherr (creator of The Goddess Tarot and Lover’s Path Tarot), urban shaman Mama Donna Henes, Diane Saarinen, and Rene Collins! They’ll be offering readings at a variety of prices on any of your questions. Refreshments will be served. Free admission. Costumes optional. Spooky surprises and door prizes.

*If you haven’t seen the Pixar film The Incredibles, Elastigirl is the multi-tasking and impressively stretchable mom of the superhero family — a great metaphor for over-extended women everywhere imho. I heart Brad Bird.
